Making our Ultimate Destination Wedding Decision

por | | 0 comments

When we started to think about all the places where we could get married, the list seemed almost endless. There were so many things to consider, that we almost didn’t know where to start. So, while Lance enjoyed a Christmas cruise with his parents, Laura sat down in her mom’s living room and started making a spreadsheet. The categories included: hotel name/brand, location, wedding features (see previous post), hotel features, cost of rooms, activities, ease of reaching the country and various other notes.

Making our Ultimate Destination Wedding DecisionWe already knew that we wanted our wedding to be on or near the beach, so that pretty much narrowed our focus to areas south of Florida. We also knew we wanted a wedding that we could customize and love but that would be somewhat affordable. So Laura began the tedious process of combing through websites, perusing TripAdvisor, emailing the on-site wedding coordinators and sending away for every brochure she could get her hands on in order to find the perfect balance. A brief list of locations we considered: Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach, the Atlantis, British Colonial Inn, Wyndham Sunshine Suites-Grand Cayman, Wyndham Condado Plaza, Westin St. John, Frenchman’s Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort, and the list went on…

Slowly, some hotels seemed to eliminate themselves. Ones that were located in town and away from the beach were the first to go, followed by ones with horrendous reviews and those over $300/night (not all-inclusive). Laura’s mom vetoed the Dominican Republic, and she focused on finding a place that we and most of our guests had not been before. When we realized that it was $800 to get to Grand Cayman from Denver (where many of our guests were coming from), that fell off the list too. The presence of good diving became a big factor, as did the wedding coordinators who would not respond or confused us with other people— NOT the kind of coordinators to whom we wanted to entrust my wedding.

As some hotels were eliminated, one began to rise to the top. Since we knew we wouldn’t be able to visit the hotel before we signed a contract, we wanted to select one that had a very good chance of being appropriately nice, and the Westin/Sheraton Our Lucaya fit the bill. It was also across the street from a great dive shop and other activities, and it was right on the beach. Though the hotel wedding coordinators were unresponsive, we found an independent planner who was great and offered everything we wanted. Even with a smallish wedding, we would still be able to have a private reception, and there was a salon and spa at the resort. Plus, no one in our group had spent much time in the Bahamas. It also didn’t hurt that it was close (only 50 miles off the Florida coast), reasonable to get there and stay there, and it was BEAUTIFUL.

From Paris with Love: More Than a Macaron Tower

por | | 0 comments

Today I am thrilled to introduce Amélie, Merci New York’s newly appointed special markets editor. Amélie splits her time between New York City and Paris {lucky girl!}. She will be bringing a wonderful balance of both cities’ culture to the Merci blog, and keeping her fingers on the pulse of French details that translate into stateside wedding inspiration.
Here at Merci, we adore the decidedly French focus on simple and elegant things, so we are thrilled to introduce Amélie’s unique perspective to the Merci New York site.
Welcome, Amélie.
merci-new-york-macaron-wedding-cake-lenotre-bouchon-payardOn both sides of the Atlantic, when it comes its time to cut the cake, most brides want something sumptuous, something pretty, and something grand. But they also want a cake that tastes deliciously good {and as a French girl myself, I know that the French never neglect taste}!
In France, the traditional wedding cake is called Pièce Montée. It is an architectural cake that was invented in early 1800s and became the favorite dessert of the French Kings’ Court. It is originally made of little round pastries called “choux” stuffed with flavoured cream, built up into a pyramid-shape. With time, French pastry cooks have invented countless shapes and flavors for Pièce Montée, and the concept has expanded into hundreds of creative, personalized options.
merci-new-york-macaron-wedding-cake-lenotre-bouchon-payard
Once macarons became trendy in France, some famed pastry cooks started to create “Macaron Towers” in lieu of “choux,” further developing Pièce Montée into the popular focal point of the stateside dessert table. But so much has been lost in this concept, and there are many other creative shapes, ideas and options that you may not know are available.
Lenôtre, a prestigious French caterer known as the ambassador of French cuisine, has also developed a presence in the States, offering a scale of sumptuous Pièces Montées for every taste -- from the traditional “choux”, to the Macaron Tower, and countless concepts in between. They are both a delight for the eye as well as for your mouth, and certainly add an unexpected embellishment to your wedding!
merci-new-york-macaron-wedding-cake-lenotre-bouchon-payardWhile Lenôtre has currently expanded to the West Coast, New York girls can certainly bring their unique and creative designs to reputable French pastry shops in Manhattan {think Payard, Bouchon or Ceci-Cela} for inspiration. I’m sure they would also create a gorgeous masterpiece that will add a touch of French charm to your wedding!

What is a Destination Wedding?

por | | 0 comments

When we began this blog, we thought we know. After all, we had a destination wedding.

Destination weddings are getting married “away.” Right? But the more we’ve been writing about it over the last year and half, the more it isn’t that clear cut.

For us, a true destination wedding is a wedding in which the destination itself becomes an integral part of the wedding experience. The destination itself ties into the overall theme of the wedding. And the experience of the wedding could not be repeated in a different location.

For example, a couple getting married in Jamaica with a reggae themed cocktail reception couldn’t have that same wedding in Mexico and have it make sense. Having a “Top of the Town” wedding in New York City couldn’t be repeated in Dallas and make sense. The destination is critical to the overall aesthetic of the wedding experience.

For us destination weddings differ from eloping because the venue itself is important. When eloping, the venue becomes secondary (or is not important at all). Historically, eloping meant getting married in secret. We don’t subscribe to that definition. For us eloping is just getting “someplace else,” but the someplace doesn’t really matter. It could be Las Vegas or some other city because it is convenient. It could be a neighboring town.

Is this just semantics or does it really matter? A bit of both.

The reason why we are clarifying this now is because we have several articles coming up in the next few weeks that depend on the clarity of this definition.

More on destination weddings to come…

What We Love | Alexis Bittar Jewelry

por | | 0 comments

alexis-bittar-jewelry-charm-chain-merci-new-york-gold-turquoisealexis-bittar-jewelry-charm-chain-merci-new-york-gold-turquoise
Actually, I'm not sure what we love more: the classic, yet fashion-forward designs of Alexis Bittar, or the lovely ladies of Charm & Chain, who provide visitors with succinct little gems of info about all the designers on their site.
I guess we'll call it a draw. And in the meantime, we'll be swooning over these gorgeous summer-specific pieces from Bittar's collection, in my favorite palette of turquoise and gold.

* New York City ladies take note: Alexis Bittar's third Manhattan location has recently opened at 1100 Madison Avenue. The enchantingly designed space is inspiring for designers, brides and fashion aficionados alike. Read more here. *

About the designer: Alexis Bittar launched his eponymous jewelry collections in the early ‘90s; but the Brooklyn native’s artistic flair was evident long before then. As a child, Bittar accompanied his parents to flea markets, where they collected and sold rare antiques. At the age of 10, Bittar showed the first signs of his entrepreneurial spirit by selling flowers across the street from his home from a hand-painted cart he made with his father. Fueled by his passion for antiques, including Art Deco Bakelite and turn-of-the-century Lalique glass, at age 22 Bittar began designing and making Lucite and semi-precious jewelry, selling it on the streets of Soho. Bittar’s bold designs quickly caught the eye of store buyers fromworld-renowned museums, luxury department stores and high-end specialty boutiques- both nationwide and overseas.
Described as “one of the most innovative jewelry designers of the 21st century”, his designs act as cult favorites of A-list celebrities, including Madonna, Cameron Diaz and Alicia Keys, as well as influential fashion icons, such as Karl Lagerfeld and Patricia Field. In 2004 Alexis Bittar won the Accessories Council’s “Rising Star” award and is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Bittar has collaborated with some of the world’s most renowned fashion designers, designing exclusive runway collections for both Michael Kors and Burberry.

How to Make a Macaron Tower | Wedding DIY

por | | 0 comments

When Merci New York creates macaron towers for any project or occasion, we always flock to Macaron de Paris for the best macarons the city has to offer. My friends Julie and Cecile create the most decadent goodies, in a host of beautiful colors and flavors, for the most discerning of New York's corporate clients {think Cartier, Valentino and Van Cleef & Arpels, just to name a few}.... Macaron de Paris is beyond amazing and an absolute pleasure to work with.
How to Make a Macaron Tower | Wedding DIYHow to Make a Macaron Tower | Wedding DIYLast month, the ladies baked a beautiful assortment of macarons for one of my dessert tables, and we thought it would be fun to share a DIY project on how to create your own. Whitney from Oh, Darling! took some step-by-step shots, and we showed that these trendy little towers are truly not that daunting to create....
But, we're not showing it here. Project Wedding was excited about our idea, and is featuring the story live on their site today. So check it out and let me know what you think!

Bridesmaid Dresses

por | | 0 comments

Bridesmaid Dresses
We had a very difficult time finding bridesmaid dresses we liked that were also affordable. Many dresses looked like cheap prom/homecoming dresses rather than a cute yet classy, beach-appropriate bridesmaid dress.

Hands down, the best dresses we found were the from the Ann Taylor Celebrations line. They make it easy by selling coordinated dresses, sashes, bags and accessories in vibrant colors. It’s also important that you don’t have to order them and wait a long time to get it. They also offer bridal gowns and even matching flower girl dresses. Last summer they had a beautiful light blue that was perfect for a beach wedding!

The disadvantage is that they only carry it at 40 select stores nationwide (thankfully the one near us carried it). You can order online, but this is the kind of thing you really want your girls to try on.

The runner-up was Jessica McClintock. While many of her dresses fell into the “prom” category, she did have several that made our bridesmaid Amanda happy and didn’t make her look like she was in high school.
