When we started to think about all the places where we could get married, the list seemed almost endless. There were so many things to consider, that we almost didn’t know where to start. So, while Lance enjoyed a Christmas cruise with his parents, Laura sat down in her mom’s living room and started making a spreadsheet. The categories included: hotel name/brand, location, wedding features (see previous post), hotel features, cost of rooms, activities, ease of reaching the country and various other notes.
We already knew that we wanted our wedding to be on or near the beach, so that pretty much narrowed our focus to areas south of Florida. We also knew we wanted a wedding that we could customize and love but that would be somewhat affordable. So Laura began the tedious process of combing through websites, perusing TripAdvisor, emailing the on-site wedding coordinators and sending away for every brochure she could get her hands on in order to find the perfect balance. A brief list of locations we considered: Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach, the Atlantis, British Colonial Inn, Wyndham Sunshine Suites-Grand Cayman, Wyndham Condado Plaza, Westin St. John, Frenchman’s Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort, and the list went on…
Slowly, some hotels seemed to eliminate themselves. Ones that were located in town and away from the beach were the first to go, followed by ones with horrendous reviews and those over $300/night (not all-inclusive). Laura’s mom vetoed the Dominican Republic, and she focused on finding a place that we and most of our guests had not been before. When we realized that it was $800 to get to Grand Cayman from Denver (where many of our guests were coming from), that fell off the list too. The presence of good diving became a big factor, as did the wedding coordinators who would not respond or confused us with other people— NOT the kind of coordinators to whom we wanted to entrust my wedding.
As some hotels were eliminated, one began to rise to the top. Since we knew we wouldn’t be able to visit the hotel before we signed a contract, we wanted to select one that had a very good chance of being appropriately nice, and the Westin/Sheraton Our Lucaya fit the bill. It was also across the street from a great dive shop and other activities, and it was right on the beach. Though the hotel wedding coordinators were unresponsive, we found an independent planner who was great and offered everything we wanted. Even with a smallish wedding, we would still be able to have a private reception, and there was a salon and spa at the resort. Plus, no one in our group had spent much time in the Bahamas. It also didn’t hurt that it was close (only 50 miles off the Florida coast), reasonable to get there and stay there, and it was BEAUTIFUL.

A 40th Birthday Invitation was created by Trish Caal of Embellishments for a surprise 40th birthday to be held in Chicago in the midst of a cold, snowy winter.
This winter invitation included a custom monogram on top of the box and on the invitation. The custom 40th invitation was sent to each guest in an off white ultra suede box. From the bride: We really wanted to give our family and friends a taste of why we love New York so much. We had the city as our backdrop for our ceremony. The Cooper Square Hotel rooftop overlooked the East Village, which is where Andrew and I met, where we have lived, and where we have spent most of our time together in New York. Our vision for the ceremony was an intimate New York experience with clean, modern architectural details... We juxtaposed this with our vision for the reception: a warm and lively dinner party at our favorite restaurant, Sala One Nine. It's a place we have so many fond memories of already and are excited to share with those closest to us.
The haute holiday windows along Fifth Avenue are bedazzled and bejeweled one again. The fabled creations make Christmastime in the city so magical, it's hard to pick a favorite. And though Bergdorf Goodman and Linda Horn tend to be our perennial picks, we found Tiffany's 2009 windows to be perfect inspiration for winter brides. This season's tiny vitrines showcase the charmed life of a fairy-tale princess, in meticulously cut paper no less. Though we're fresh off a viewing of Slash at the MAD, and obvious admirers of all things pretty-paper, we think these darling vignettes would be a perfect palette for any winter fete. We can't help but imagine a lush Oscar de la Renta ballgown sweeping through the scene. Happy Monday! We're thrilled to kick off the week with an exclusive beauty photo shoot, compliments of Merci New York's resident beauty expert, Paul Labrecque. As many of you know, Paul Labrecque is one of New York's most sought-after celebrity stylists. His three Manhattan salons {at the tony CORE: Club, Reebok Club and his freestanding Upper East Side location} are filled with fashionable brides prepping to look their wedding-day best. Today, Paul crafted three of his favorite wedding makeup looks just for Merci New York readers. He detailed the step-by-step process of each look below and orchestrated an exclusive photo shoot with his amazing makeup artist, Daisy... And oh yes, one other small detail... he's inviting you to receive a free beauty consultation of your own {merci, Paul!}. See below for details. Pink and Plum Princess:Most brides that come to my salon want to "look natural" or "look like themselves." The perfect color palette that will look natural and simple yet sexy and picture appropriate are Pinks and Plums. My preference for brides is a foundation application with an airbrush makeup machine. Most bridal makeup artists use airbrush makeup and even though it costs more, it is the way to go. Skin and makeup will look flawless in photos and last through the whole day and night. After the foundation applied with the airbrush machine, focus on a plum perfect eye. Pinks and Plum shades are so broad, it is up to you and your makeup artist to match the exact palette for you and skin tone. It can be subtle with more pinks and shimmers or striking with more purples and plums. Finish the look with plump gorgeous lips using Lip Fusion Lip Gloss in Sugar. This specific color not only has a pink mauve hue, but it also has blue undertones that help make your teeth appear whiter. Your whitened smile and plumper lips will show how gloriously happy you are on your big day! Hollywood Glamour: One of my favorite eras I pull inspiration from for my brides is the 1940's Hollywood glamour era. A clean and classic eye with a bold and sexy red lip is an incredible way to make a dramatic Hollywood entrance down the aisle to your leading man. When I say clean and classic eye, I refer to a natural looking eye with nude and natural colors. I prefer minimal black eye liner for this look. Fake lashes with fabulous black mascara like Cle de Peau's The Mascara is a must. A natural pinkish cheek will allow a blushing glow. The focal point for this bridal look must be the fabulous red lips. A wonderful red that works for most skin tones is NARS Christina which is a shimmery Raspberry color. To really be bold, go with NARS Fire Down Below and a hint of clear gloss. The groom won't be able to handle the wait for "You may now kiss the bride!"
Golden Goddess: Whether having an elegant black tie wedding or an intimate affair with your closest friends at a local restaurant, wearing a sexy smokey eye is a perfect choice, but break the norm by using gold and browns instead of heavy black and charcoal colors. The look is sexy and glamorous yet softer than the conventional charcoal smokey eye. It particularly suits medium to dark skin tones but can be tried and tested on just about anyone. The key to keeping eyeshadow from melting into your eyelid crease as the day goes on is to kept eyelids oil-free. Start with a primer like NARS Pro-Prime. Next, apply eyeliner above the upper lash line, drawing line thicker in the middle of eye. For color on the bottom {a key smokey eye look} you'll want to use a eyeliner pencil because they're easiest to smudge. Once the line is drawn, run your finger over it to smudge the line. You can also apply a bit of shadow to get full smudge effect. Apply light base color Again, the key to a smokey eye is pairing a lighter base with the darker hue. I prefer a nice cream shade for my base. Sweep a light, shimmery shadow over the lids to your brow bone. Blend in darker color, but keep dark color below the crease. Now that you have the base and eyeliner on, it's time to get the smokey effect. You need a darker eyeshadow shade. Using an eyeshadow brush blend in color starting at your lash line, blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears. Stop deep color at crease. The key here is to blend, blend, blend.Finish with several coats of mascara. You'll want to apply a few coats of mascara so lashes are thick and dark. If you don't have naturally long, curled lashes, curl them with a lash curler first. Pair your gorgeous golden eye with a neutral gloss like NARS Sandpiper which looks great on everyone. Make sure your maid of honor has extra Sandpiper gloss for you in her purse!

It's Tuesday Shoesday, and we're psyched to get in on the action with many of our fellow bloggers. I thought we'd start with one of our favorite photos from a local New York City wedding photographer, Brett Mathews Photography. Sheri captured the rockstar-esque mise en scene of these killer Christian Louboutins when shooting a wedding at the Tribeca Rooftop. Now we have to say, we're not normally fans of anything bedazzled, bejeweled, or be-Snookified {a.k.a. Jimmy Choo for UGG - WTF?}, but these shoes are just beyond chic. They're perfectly classy-lassie to pair with your Oscar de la Renta dress, and truly make for the prettiest of wedding shoe pics... unlike Mr. Choo's latest, which for $795, seem best worn with spandex and a bump-it {just sayin'}.

This may be a silly question, but have you seen issue #4 of Nonpareil Magazine? It totally rocks and needless to say, Merci New York was thrilled to be a part of it! I had an amazing time styling the Mad Men inspired spread shot by Whitney and Dustin of Oh Darling Photography, and loved dreaming up other "big-day, small-details" for the shoot, such as DIY mint julep favors {with custom printables!} and a retro "lunch box" welcome guest gift. But the most fun came from propping my family's vintage car, and having the help and hard work of my close family and friends on set. So before I share some fab pics... A big, big thank you to my dad- who brought his {other} baby, my great grandmother's classic 1966 Chevelle, and trusted me to doll it to pure 60s wedding perfection. It totally drove home the theme... {no pun intended}. And of courseto my husband, Michael Weppner, and good friend Annie Soderstrom, who posed as our fabulous Draper-esque couple and allowed me to play Barbie with them all morning... You guys were amazing! Thank you's complete, I'd love to share a few unpublished shots of Merci New York's work on the shoot! These projects really spoke to what the business-end of our company is all about- making sure that little wedding details are wonderfully smashing... Enjoy!I wanted to work with "inspired" fashion that didn't appear costumed. Michael is wearing an Armani suit, Canali shirt, vintage tie and Gucci loafers. Annie's gorgeous retro-inspired dress was pulled from one of my favorite designers of the moment, Prabal Gurung, and was accented with a vintage fabric flower from my styling kit. Her shoes are from J Crew. Accessories: luggage from Janelle Sing, bouquet by Poppies + Posies.The fedora is also vintage, from my styling kit. I just love this car. As a classic 60s "muscle car," my dad's 1966 Chevelle has been featured in period films such as American Gangster, Driving in Cars with Boys, and Spike Lee's Crooklyn, to name a few. Because it's not as typical as other vintage cars, grooms love it. It's rented often for events within the NYC area {feel free to email me for details}.Staging a location can be tricky. Here, I wanted to show the red door of a firehouse on 77th and Amsterdam. Of course, this was an active driveway, and moments after we perfectly positioned the car and cans, sirens rang and the trucks needed to rush out. But the few shots we had were great. I designed this "Mix a Mint Julep" favor as a crafty nod to Mad Men's frequent mixology -the shape, textures and polish of this design would make it the perfect placesetting as well.... It's sweet, and delicious!The idea behind the fashion styling was to keep the looks "60s inspired", but not too costume-y. In lieu of a tight chingon or overdone hair, we elected to keep Annie's hair softly tousled, and let the dramatic dress do the talking. Out of town welcome gifts and baskets have become a staple at many weddings, and they were the focus of Merci New York's styling business in its early development. We always try to create stylized, unique details for our welcome gifts. They're your guests' first impression of your wedding, so it makes sense to give them a taste of what's to come. We want to revisit the basics of destination weddings.
For us, a destination wedding isn’t just a “wedding away” or “elopement.” Sure, it’s possible to get married someplace else (geographically speaking). And while that is a wedding away, it does not count as a destination wedding in our book.
For us, a true destination wedding is a wedding in which the destination itself becomes an important and essential part of the wedding experience. The destination itself ties into the overall theme of the wedding. And the experience of the wedding could not be repeated in a different location.
For us destination weddings differ from eloping because the venue itself is important. When eloping, the venue becomes secondary (or is not important at all). Historically, eloping meant getting married in secret. We don’t subscribe to that definition. For us eloping is just getting married “someplace else,” but the someplace doesn’t really matter. It could be Las Vegas or some other city because it is convenient. It could be a neighboring town or in a different country.
It’s important for you to decide if you want an elopement (wedding away) or a true destination wedding. It is critical for you to know in your mind exactly what you want. Some venues and locations try to sell “destination weddings” that are nothing more than elopements. You need to ask questions of the venue and ensure that their idea of a destination wedding matches yours.

Magic was achieved by transforming the ballroom of the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC with creative lighting decor. The bride and groom, who had Lebanese heritage, worked with their wedding planner,to simulate the essence of a night in their native country. As the evening festivities progressed, the lighting kept pace with the mood of the room. When the guests initially arrived amber and burgundy uplighting flooded the room. The lamps alternated in color along each side of the two largest walls to provide a warm and romantic glow. The large ballroom space was able to fade away because the lighting produced a sense of depth and intimacy. The table decor was brought into focus with pin spot lights shining down on the centerpieces. Candles were used along the base of the centerpiece to complete the romance of the table decor. After dinner, the dance floor was washed in deep purple lighting, and the lighting around the room evolved with the addition of a purple hue for the energetic dance and party fever that took over the room.

We already knew that we wanted our wedding to be on or near the beach, so that pretty much narrowed our focus to areas south of Florida.
