Wedding Wine Choices

Wedding wine and cocktail selections are not something you usually have control over. However, cocktail and spirit selections are a reflection of your personality. This is a point that you should try to negotiate with your venue.

For wedding wines, try to find something unusual and memorable (both for you and your guests). Many venues will give you one white and one red. Your will be a chardonnay (maybe a pinot grigio if you're really lucky). Your red will be a merlot or possibly a Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are the same ones that are served at nearly every event known to man - from boring work receptions to the woman down the street's wedding. Not very fun, creative or inviting. Why not spice things up a bit? Or at least dare to be different!

We’re white wine drinkers, but are on an ABC kick (“anything but chardonnay”). Consider a Riesling (Chateau Ste Michelle from the U.S. or just about any riesling wine from the Mosel-Saar region in Germany) or a Gewurztraminer.

Instead of champagne, find a different sparkling white wine. We’re big fans of Prosecco and Franciacorta from Italy. (see Wedding Toast, Part I).

On the red wine front, why not a nice Côtes du Rhône or Chianti?

Finally, if you’re having a tropical destination wedding, consider doing cocktails instead of wines (your venue will definitely accommodate this, and frankly will love you for it…they make more money). We did this for our wedding and opted for Pina Coladas and Bahama Mamas.

J Crew Opens Bridal Boutique on Madison Avenue

The Upper East Side was a-buzz last night as press, style casters and design luminaries flocked to the opening of J. Crew's posh bridal boutique on Madison Avenue. Guests perused two floors of gorgeous wedding gowns {priced $295-$3,500}, accessories, veils and jewelery, and ogled over the new 769 collection {an exclusive assortment of party dresses and accessories named after the boutique's location at 769 Madison Avenue}.
Upon walking into the soiree, I had the pleasure of meeting Tracy Gardner, President of J. Crew, who enthusiastically discussed the store's development and their exclusive collection of vintage jewelry, which is truly to die for. Layered with the company's chic assortment of collection pieces {which Darcy Miller modeled throughout the evening}, the line also includes handmade exclusive pieces from famed jewelers, such as New York City-based Miriam Haskell.
Truly stunning. And dangerously enticing for brides, maids and moms.
The shelves circulating the French-inspired space are stocked with a rainbow of soft cashmere cardigans, polished clutches and glittery shoes, as well as seductively coquettish lingerie and perfect shades of pink Essie polish. Brides looking to add a decidedly couture touch to their look can snag exclusive Leah C. veils that would put SJP to shame.
Truly, there was gorgeous eye candy from every vantage point; and as influencers such as Kate Spade, Aerin Lauder, and Robert Verde perused the racks with Jenna Lyons, the space was giddy with excitement and accolades. The store is not only stunning, it's a must-see resource for any city bride.

Save the Dates

“Save the dates,” or STDs, are becoming increasingly popular for all weddings, but they can be particularly useful for destination weddings since guests may need extra time to make travel plans and take time off work. They are typically very brief, listing the couple’s names, wedding date and sometimes the location, simply informing guests to “save the date.” For traditional weddings, STDs are often sent out about four months ahead of the wedding. For destination weddings, timing can be as early as six to eight months in advance. We sent ours out about nine months in advance—September for our June wedding.

STDs can take a variety of forms and are often much less formal than a traditional invite. They are usually creative and designed to catch a guest’s attention. Options used frequently include: a photo booth-esque strip featuring multiple photos of the couple, a postcard or tourist guide from the destination, a card showing a week’s forecast of sunny skies, a passport holder, a luggage tag, or just about anything tropical one could imagine. Because we wanted something fun that would set the tone for our largely informal wedding, we decided to go with a magnet that showed a beach scene and all the applicable details for our wedding (same as the picture; although this is not ours). With the magnet, we included a card that listed the URL of our wedding website where guests could read more about the Bahamas and our hotel and get all the information they would need to travel to the wedding. The STDs helped build a lot of excitement in advance of the wedding, and it was a great way to let people know about the website too. Nearly a year after our wedding, people mention that they still have the magnet on their fridge.

Our vendor, Magnet Queen, came highly recommended from a number of other brides on The Knot. The magnets were high quality, and the company representatives were very kind and responsive, even going out of their way to let us know that they had miscalculated a discount, so we would be charged less than we thought. We had the opportunity to view a proof before the magnets were printed, and we were very satisfied with the service we received. Another very popular vendor among Knot brides is VistaPrint. Though we didn’t use them, we heard positive feedback about the quality of their products as well.

"Gilt Groupe is going to be one of the fastest-growing Internet companies that has ever happened," predicts Kevin Ryan, CEO of New York incubator AlleyCorp, which owns the e-commerce fashion site.

"We'll do tens of millions of dollars in revenue this year," says Ryan of Gilt Groupe, which is like an online version of the designer sample sales New Yorkers love for their exclusivity almost as much as for their discounted prices.

"I used to walk by 18th Street and see 200 women waiting in line," recalls Ryan, who is the former CEO of DoubleClick Inc. "I asked them, 'What are you waiting for?,' and they said, 'Oh, the Marc Jacobs sample sale.' And I thought, 'That's great, but why can't I do that online, and people from Philadelphia or Westchester or many other places could take advantage of that?' "

"We're taking the burden of schlepping to a sample sale at odd hours of the day, and we're bringing the phenomenon online, not just to New Yorkers but to all of America," explains Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, co-founder and chief merchandising officer of Gilt Groupe, which secured $5 million from Matrix Partners last year.

The invitation-only site features limited-time sales of clothing and accessories created by a wide range of designers, from the established Ralph Lauren to Band of Outsiders' hip newcomer Scott Sternberg. The company buys all the merchandise it sells and photographs it all especially for the site.

Gilt Groupe got a new chief executive on Monday. Susan Lyne, the former CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, is replacing co-founder Alexis Maybank in the CEO role. Maybank is taking on the chief strategist title.

Gilt Groupe is one of half a dozen technology startups founded and seeded by Ryan and AlleyCorp chairman Dwight Merriman, who as co-founder of DoubleClick was the online ad firm's chief technologist. Dance Lessons

It’s your wedding and you want to put your best foot forward. It will be more fun for you and your guests if you feel really comfortable on the dance floor.

We are not big dancers, so we did not do dance lessons prior to our wedding. While we danced a little at our wedding, I think we would have danced more had we felt more comfortable.

As our friends have gone through the wedding process, many of them have opted for lessons. There is a proliferation of dance studios like the Fred Astaire Dance Studio and independent studios that can provide dance instruction at relatively reasonable rates. Make sure you tell your instructor about your destination wedding plans so you can receive instruction in local dances.

Dance lessons are one more thing for you to consider in your wedding planning process.

Merci New York in Martha Stewart Weddings Fall 2010 Issue

We are thrilled to announce that Merci New York has made it to the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine! Can you see me? Yes, that's right... I'm the awe-inspired blond in the far left corner, swooning over the luscious dresses sweeping down the runway. Each one was more gorgeous than the last, truly.Last month, Merci New York was thrilled to sit in on a runway-inspired fashion editorial that is now gracing the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings' {amazing} Fall 2010 Fashion Issue. The spread is packed with pages upon pages of luxe and stylish eye candy. From ethereal gowns {think Oscar de la Renta, Angel Sanchez, Carolina Herrera...} to elegant baubles {Harry Winston, Van Cleef and Arpels...} and every accessory in between {Christian Louboutin...}, it was truly a fashion-loving bride's dream -- and a wonderful afternoon for myself and fellow wedding bloggers Bee Kim of Wedding Bee and Jillian Clark of 100 Layer Cake.
Also sharing the fruits of the MSW styling team's impeccable eye were industry style-luminaries Sylvia Weinstock, Mark Ingram, Ronnie Rothstein, Gabriella Risatti, and of course, Martha Stewart Weddings Editorial Director, Darcy Miller.... whom you can also see sitting around the front row of the stunning Ukrainian Institute, {which actually happens to be a tres-chic wedding locale for the uptown bride}.
The historic Upper East Side mansion was actually a private home until 1955, and has played host to several posh events and iconic films in the past 50 years. It's beautiful architecture and dramatic moldings made me feel swept up and dropped down in the reels of Valentino: The Last Emperor. It was a phenomenal setting. But I digress. Let's talk fashion. Suffice it to say, my behind-the scenes i-Phone shots couldn't hold a candle to these gorgeous images... so you will just have to take my word on the pure scope of this project.
As Sherri Caudell Brennan, MSW's Fashion Editor, swirled past endless racks of taffeta, lace and silk, and escorted me to her accessories pulls, my heart almost sank. Tables upon tables of stunning shoes anxiously awaited their five seconds of fame, including some very sparkly favorites by Giuseppe Zanotti, ribbony peep-toes by Badgely Mischka, and ever-chic Christian Louboutin pumps.
Be-ribboned belts? Plush boleros? Blinding rings worthy for the likes of Tinsley Mortimer? Check, check and check! The back rooms were stocked with so many beautiful pieces, I wasn't sure how Sherry, Kate Berry and Daniel Biasatti could even select their looks. Their choices were remarkable though, and the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings proves it.
Anyways, here I am waxing poetic, when you can actually experience this beautiful fashion editorial for yourself... The Martha Stewart Weddings Fall 2010 Fashion Issue hit newsstands this week, and I've already spied a few lucky brides perusing the pages at Hudson News at Grand Central Terminal.
While they were probably {ie, most certainly} ogling over this spread, these are a few of the other articles they may have missed their train by reading:
