Selecting your destination wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you can make. Theres no do overs on your wedding photos. And, unlike catering, theres less margin for error. So, you really only have one shot of getting it right.
Adding to the complexity, chances are very good that you wont find the resident talent that you are looking for in the wedding destination of your choice. Weve blogged on this before in Covering The Basics Photographer, but you should count on hiring and bringing your own photographer with you.
Today on WeddingBee, Joe Milton of the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers has an interesting posting on Top Five Questions to Ask Your Photographer. Now, one thing weve learned is that there are more wedding photography associations than you can shake a stick at. Some reputable, some not so do your homework.
But Joe Milton poses some very good questions (these are his questions, but our commentary):
Can I read through the contract? If not, run far and fast. The contract should be clear and articulate what is expected of both parties including deadlines! Photographers are notorious for getting you to sign the contract and then take FOREVER to deliver the goods.
Can I see some sample albums of complete weddings? If not, run far and fast. Every photographer can get a good picture or two, but you want to see the whole process. Any good photographer should be able to show you lots of quality work.
How much experience do you have? The more weddings theyve done, but the better they will probably be. This is crucial in destination weddings as many native photographers are just Sunday afternoon amateurs. You want a pro.
How much direction or posing do you do during the day? Some photographers are photojournalist only. Some only do posed shots. For us, we liked the mix. Of our favorites, they were posed. Or rather, our photographer gave direction (walk up this staircase, walk down the beach this way) and then she captured the moment. Those were our favorites. But some of the most meaningful moments were the candids (the brides grandmother walking her down the aisle because she is now paralyzed).
Do you have insurance? Any decent photographer will, so this is not the definitive question that many might think.
This is a good list. But after reading it, the questions seem very elementary. They will only help you rule bad apples and will do nothing to help you select from a small pool of 3-5 truly professional photographers. To this rather basic list, we have added our own list of must ask questions:
Can I speak with a couple whos wedding you have shot in the last six months? If a photographer is unable or unwilling to provide a list of references for you to check out, this is a problem. It also surprised us that this should be in the bag for the photographer. Yet, we had photographers provide us with references that were negative, so its worth going through the process.
How much experience do you have with the location/venue/type that I having? - No wedding photographer will have done exactly what you are doing, but have they done something similar? If they havent done a Jewish ceremony or a beach wedding, it might be a problem for you.
What is your typical method? In our professional capacity, we both hire a lot of vendors. We are a big fan of asking very broad, open-ended questions like this. It gets the photographer talking about his/her work broadly. The good ones should be able to string together a story that makes sense. Those new to the business or who are weekend warriors will stumble on this kind of broad, open-ended question.
Do you bring an assistant? This is useful to know. Will they be doing all the work themselves, or farming it out? If bringing an assistant, try to get a clear picture on what that persons role may be. And remember, this will also increase your cost factors.
How many different cameras do you bring? In other words, will they be switching back and forth and might miss the moment. Or, will they have back-up with them in case something goes wrong? Its important.
Film vs digital? In this age of digital everything, there are some photographers that sill do film (believe it or not). So ask.
How long before we see proofs? This is self explanatory.
How long before we get our actual album? Also self explanatory.
Who covers your expenses? This is a point of negotiation. Ideally, its better for both you and photographer if you cover the expenses. Its better for the photographer because they are not out of pocket on anything. Its better for you because the photographer will probably charge a mark-up fee (some percentage of the actual cost; so a $700 airline ticket to the Bahamas marked up 15% will actually cost you $805).
What is your mark-up fee (both for out of pocket travel and also for stock/equipment)? The photographer should be absolutely honest about this up front. In our experience, too many photographers use this as a back end profit center and you have no idea how bad you will get hit until the final bill arrives.
Finally, its not a question, but its worth stating: actually meet with your photographer once or twice before the wedding. It sounds obvious, but many couples have been known to hire a photographer sight unseen because they found them on some website and their work looked good. This is especially common where destination wedding photographers can live all over the country and fly into the wedding. Try to find a way to meet first and take a temperature check.

Title: Choose Your Weapon - The Fight Glove Revolution
As Everlast reaches it's 100 year anniversary in 2010, it is imperative that we continue to serve as the premier brand in the boxing arena. In September 2009, we will launch three (3) new fight gloves (The MX, 1910, and Protex 3), marking the first time in our brands history that we will be providing fighters with a choice of fight gloves. "Choose your Weapon" is a marketing and product campaign that encourages the boxer to explore their fight glove options in order to select the right glove that compliments their individual fighting style and physical attributes.
The attached video is a look through the fighters eyes on the perception of their hands, as well as the emotional and physical requirements that go into selecting right fight gloves. The fighters view is complimented by insight on the design origin, construction, and performance characteristics of each glove by the Everlast product Team.
No other brand on the market offers the fighter a choice, and thus it is imperative as the market leader in product and innovation that Everlast remain the Choice of Champions.
From the bride: We really wanted to give our family and friends a taste of why we love New York so much. We had the city as our backdrop for our ceremony. The Cooper Square Hotel rooftop overlooked the East Village, which is where Andrew and I met, where we have lived, and where we have spent most of our time together in New York. Our vision for the ceremony was an intimate New York experience with clean, modern architectural details... We juxtaposed this with our vision for the reception: a warm and lively dinner party at our favorite restaurant, Sala One Nine. It's a place we have so many fond memories of already and are excited to share with those closest to us.
Weddings in general, but especially destination weddings, can have a significant environmental impact. Sad, but true. It is important to try and minimize your environmental impact, both for your own personal satisfaction and for future generations.
One way to do this is through carbon offsets or carbon credits. According to Wikipedia: Carbon credits are a key component of national and international emissions trading schemes There are also many companies that sell carbon credits to commercial and individual customers who are interested in lowering their carbon footprint on a voluntary basis. Carbon credits have received some criticism lately (and there have been some scams), so its important to do business with a reputable firm.
Essentially it works like this you pay a little money to a company or nonprofit group to offset some aspect of your life (your car, your household energy use, etc.). The company or nonprofit uses the money to fund projects that generate environmentally-friendly power (i.e., wind power, methane, etc.) these are projects that arent likely to be built, except with the support of people like you and us. The carbon credits are relatively inexpensive and range from $2-15 per month, or $25+ per year.
We are fans of two groups offering this service. The first is a non-profit organization called CarbonFund.org. They also offer a special ZeroCarbon Wedding an 8-ton carbon offset, for $44. This is tax deductible. The second company is Native Energy. They are for-profit company, but specialize in building new projects (and actually offer specifics on the projects they fund).
We fully appreciate that weddings are expensive and this is probably one time in your life that you dont have extra money laying around to buy carbon credits. Doing this is important. Please consider it.

Today we are thrilled to share a story posted by Pamela Williams, Managing Editor at Felt & Wire, one of our favorite resources for finding chic and stunning stationery. Pamela thought that Merci New York's readers would appreciate her recent story on Rosebrook Meyer {which you can find, in it's entirety here}. Be sure to visit Felt & Wire for more wonderful paper inspiration....
What would you do differently if you could do your wedding all over again? Thats the question Ashley Rosebrook and Maureen Meyer asked themselves when they set out to design their own wedding invitation line. The designers, who met at Aveda and have worked with brands like Vera Wang and Victorias Secret, found they were inspired not by traditional bridal magazines, but by bold, trend-setting editorial fashion design. Combining this aesthetic with the capabilities of todays state-of-the-art digital printing, Rosebrook Meyer was born.Erin invitation
When Ashley Rosebrook got married, she says she fell in love with a blush-colored 1930s vintage gown which she had tailored by a master pattern maker. Business partner Maureen Meyer chose to wear her mothers 1960s gown, restyled to suit her more modern aesthetic. So its not surprising that the wedding invitation suites they have created are as fresh, modern and individualistic as their personal styles. Three words you simply wont find in the Rosebrook Meyer lexicon: off the rack. The 28 designs, available exclusively at rosebrookmeyer.com, were created for fashion-forward couples who are seeking something completely new and unique.
Alison invitation
Ashley and Maureen, tell us about yourselves and your new wedding invitation line. We have a history of working in the fashion and beauty worlds and both worked for Esteé Lauders Aveda Corporation. Ashley designed and launched home collections for Vera Wang, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Gucci. Maureen worked for Victorias Secret Beauty and went on to build the branding for fashion startup Martin & Osa. Our work in these worlds has greatly influenced the aesthetics of Rosebrook Meyer. When researching the market, we were shocked by the lack of newness or inspiring options for brides. Though there were some companies doing beautiful invitations, the formats and papers all looked the same and most were letterpressed. We started to think of a wedding more as a fashion industry event or gallery opening. We wanted to create invitations that would inspire recipients and build excitement around the event.
June invitation
This is a wedding invitation with full-color photography? Yes, as we learned more about emerging digital print technologies, we realized we could do some really interesting, unique formats that are different from whats out there. For example: photographic printing; two-sided, double-thick paper-stock; and a variety of paper textures linen, eggshell and pearlized finishes. We also incorporated more traditional techniques, like duplexing, to make the invitations super thick. We created our Sensuous collection around this photographic capability. Our thinking was that these designs could set the floral theme for the entire wedding, so it all ties together.
Jaqueline Invitation
How do you design a wedding invitation to be consistent with the style of the event? Weddings are taking place in gallery spaces and lofts now, in addition to churches and gardens. We provide a variety of options so couples can find a look that truly coordinates with their event, as well as their styles and personalities. The traditional, letterpressed, centered-script invitation is not a one-size-fits-all option it simply doesnt work for a wedding that will take place in a modern space. We are encouraging brides to be consistent with the style of their event. Dont be afraid to be different!
Belle invitationWhere did your inspiration come from? Particularly because we live in New York City, we knew there are very stylish couples out there looking for more impactful ways to announce the most important day of their lives. We started by imagining what we would want if we could do it all over today. We pored through stacks of new and old fashion publications and were inspired by interesting, large-scale typography as well as the different personalities that live within fashion, from more classic and demure all the way to very edgy, couture collections. On a personal level, Ashley and I bring a mix of styles to the table. She tends toward antique/vintage and I toward modern/clean, as was evidenced at each of our weddings. That juxtaposition of new and old is the heart of our brand, as you can see in the styled photography which Ashley shot!
Sensuous mood board {mood board details are at article's end}
Sophisticated mood board
Avant-Garde mood board
How did you decide to name the invitations? Mia, Megan, Ellen, Eliza, Alison naming the invitations was our way of giving each one a personality. We went as far as to select dresses (none of which were traditional wedding gowns), flowers and china for most of them. We put together inspiration boards for each of our categories Sophisticated, Avant-garde, Glamorous, Classic and Sensuous that we used internally to make sure we were really channeling that particular style. We must admit they are gorgeous!
Mia invitation
Tell us about your approach to typography. No two invitations could ever look the same. Some companies use patterns and motifs to set their invitations apart; we use typography. We had a lot of fun playing with the type in an abstract, artful way using overlays, larger scales, deconstructing the type, etc. As we mentioned, we had both always been inspired by this typography as art tendency in fashion mags.
Katya invitation The print quality is incredible. How do you print your invitations? Our invitations are printed at Hennegan on an HP Indigo digital press. This technology has come so far in recent years! It is really the advancements in digital print technology and the papers made specifically for these machines that enabled us to create this business. And we needed the quality and attention to detail that Hennegan is known for to be in the luxury market. Tell us about the lusciously thick paper stocks youve chosen. We use Mohawk Superfine Eggshell and Via Linen. We had so much fun with the linen! It looks so modern in ultra-white. Both of these papers offer a level of luxury only recently available in digital print technology. And our envelopes are Superfine Eggshell 100 lb. text, so they feel quite premium. Ashley invitationHow did you arrive at the final ink color palette? We looked at colors in fashion and provided a range to give people options. We edited the full color palette for each suite in terms of what we think looks best as well as to yield the best print quality. Your sample kit is unique. Who should order one, what does it cost, and how does the process work? It is important to note that we exist solely online. This can be intimidating for brides, as they are used to being able to touch/feel the paper types and see the color palette in person. So we designed a sample kit that is available on our website for $15, including shipping. It arrives in 23 days and includes all the elements a bride would otherwise see in the store: paper options, color palette and print quality. Online shopping and networking is the way of the world now, and so we wanted to provide that convenience for brides. If a bride falls in love with three our four of the designs and wants to try them on like she might a gown, is that possible? Is there any way to preview the look? In cases like this, we typically speak directly with the bride first. In special instances, we will send the customer three sample layouts using their names. Megan invitationIf you had to choose just one design for yourself, which would you choose and why? This changes from day to day, as we love what we do. Today, Ashley would choose Megan {above} because she loves the mix of the large scale serif type with the ultramodern format. A bit of old and new, classic and modern. I also love the chocolate color. Maureen would choose Elena {below} because it is so unique. I love the interesting formats horizontal for the invite and square for the save-the-date and the incredibly clean and bold-but-elegant typography. I would probably do it in a soft black and design the whole wedding around that a chic mix of black, white, ivory and greys. Elena invitation Rosebrook Meyer offers sophisticated wedding invitations and related materials that use cutting-edge production methods, all available through the convenience of a seamless, online ordering system. Custom designs are available. All items in the line, with the exception of pearl papers and vellum overlays, are printed on Mohawk papers.

I get this question about once a week, "What are the Best Video Setting For The Canon DSLR cameras".
So let me start off by eliminating two things you can take off the list. Those are aperture and ISO. Aperture, I really can't tell you what to set it on because it depends on the type of look you are going after. With a shallow depth of field or not.
And the other one is ISO. ISO is kind of there for exposure how how you are going to set the exposure. I will say you do not want go too far north of let's say 1600 especially on like the Canon T2i then it gets really noisy. Obviously you are going to need to use aperture along with the ISO to get the right exposure but at least it gets you in the ball park. Those two ingredients are taken off the list.
So the first I can tell you about what is on the list is shutter speed. Basically if you are going for a "filmic" look you are pretty much going to double your frame rate, so if you are shooting 24 frames per second you are going to want a 1/50th of a second shutter speed and if you are shooting at 60 frames per second you are going to go with 125th frames per second shutter speed. Now I will tell you it's just kind of a guideline and a rule but I have shot at much higher shutter speeds and it has worked wonderful, especially if you are shooting something like myself which is just basically a moving head.
If you just getting your feet wet with your camera I think the best setting for Picture styles is Standard. I use it 90% of the time. If you are outside filming some landscapes for instance then you might want to try Landscape, and if you are using a close in portrait shot you might want to try Portrait picture style. After you have had the camera for a while and you want to take it to the next level, you might want to create a very flat picture style so you can have more control over color, sharpness and saturation in post.
As for White Balance, the best setting by far is always going to be custom. This is where you get the perfect color temperature for your shot. This is best way to do it, but it is also unfortunately the most time consuming.
The best setting for focus is to set it on quick focus and focus to one of the many points within the view finder. This is just my personal favor way to do this, I am sure others might disagree me but I got really accurate and fast results using this method.
Disable your AGC to get this cleanest audio, AGC is automatic gain control. I use a hack method for this, but there are many other ways to do this as well like a buying a Juicelink box or a software hack if you are brave enough to install it on your camera.
Set Movie Exposure to Manual, this is the best way to go by not letting the camera to decide for you.
Grid display to Grid 1, this helps me with my composition just right.
Disable Highlight Tone Priority, I have done many tests with this and found it best just to leave it off.
Auto Lighting Optimizer is set to standard. Again I have done a lot of tests with this and I find that this setting not only helps my portrait photos but it even helps when I do video interviews if the lighting is not quite even on the person's face.
That is about it for the best settings you can use on your Canon DSLR for video. Thanks for watching and thanks to Darren for letting me do a guest post again.
Back by popular demand, we are excited to reintroduce our Chic Vendor Spotlight posts, showcasing some of our favorite vendors, artists and designers across New York City. Today, we're featuring the lovely Lion in the Sun. The landmark Park Slope paperie is responsible for creating some of the most beautiful city-centric invitations and paper goods in New York, making them a go-to resource for many Manhattan brides. For close to ten years, city brides have trusted Lion in the Sun to provide gorgeous stationery that creates a perfect first impression of their wedding. While known for their iconic New York-inspired work, Lion in the Sun also creates a myriad of other designs, from the very simple and modern, to the most ornate and elegant. Merci New York was thrilled to chat with owner Melinda Morris about the development and philosophy of Lion in the Sun and share some of their gorgeous work with our readers...
So, tell us about yourself! As a child, I worked at the original Lion in the Sun in Huntington, Long Island for my parents {which I affectionately recall as slave labor}. Then, after a career as an event planner, I decided to open my own store that specializes in printed invitations because I wanted to be in a business that revolves around happy occasions. That store is located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, my home since 1996. And it is in that store that I met my future husband, David, who lived around the corner.
David and I love being a part of the community and have a passion for and pride in the work we do. We know that when you visit the store to place a printing order, it is our responsibility as experts to guide you through the multiple options in terms of products available, customizations, appropriate wording, etc., to make sure the you are delighted not just with your order, but with your experience as well. Additionally, while our store reflects a deep appreciation for fine paper products, we also are respectful of our place on the planet and have been actively seeking out quality recycled paper goods.
What inspired the creation of your brand? I opened Lion in the Sun with the idea to create a paperie with beautiful cards, gifts and wrap and custom invitation studio atmosphere -- with a low-key, laid back, no-stress, no pretension atmosphere and a focus on local artisan and designers.
What makes Lion in the Sun unique? For the custom invitations, we try very hard to never say No, you cant do that or We cant do it on a small budget. We believe that every wedding is important and special whether they have $500 or $5,000 dollars, and we make sure that everyone feels that we can help them achieve their vision for their wedding invitations. I love the idea of being able to do almost anything. Our inspiration comes from our clients; they come to us with the greatest ideas. We also do a lot of design that is inspired by New York City and our city-centric surrounding, including the locations where our clients are getting married. I think we are unique in the market in that we offer affordable options and custom design along with our experience in event planning and etiquette all in one package.
When did you decide to begin Lion in the Sun? As cliché as it sounds... In September of 2001, the combination of turning 30 and 9/11 {which happened in the same week} really shocked me into pursuing what I really wanted. I realized that my parents business {the original Lion in the Sun based in Long Island - still going strong} was a great model, and I remembered what I had always loved about the biz is that you get to work with people celebrating happy moments, and lend a meaningful experience to their important events! Most importantly, I realized that my neighborhood had nothing like it. It was brimming with young couples with new babies and growing families - and nowhere to buy beautiful paper. Additionally, I know so many wonderful designers right here in Brooklyn that I wanted to offer a place to showcase their work. So within 6 months I had quit my well-paying job, had begun renovations and was sourcing vendors for my own paperie.
What do you like most about your job? I am so lucky to do what I do. Just about every day we get to hear happy stories of love, new babies and family celebrations. We get to help guide them through the process that can be scary, stressful and expensive. It is rewarding to see them come out happy on the other side. My favorite {and seemingly most helpful} thing we tell all our clients is "Relax, its just a party!
Brag to us a bit {we won't tell}... I am most proud of our great reputation and that our clients become family. We are proud to support our clients quirky, offbeat requests and revel in the successes of making their vision come to life. We are so grateful for their appreciation and the loyal customer base we have. We believe in being honest and supportive of our clients. We work hard to help people navigate a potentially overwhelming and stressful time, and instead, make it meaningful and fun for them. {We understand that sometimes its not just about the paper!}

How divine is this invitation suite by Laura of Orange Beautiful? Laura designed it for her sister's wedding at the Parker Palm Springs and wanted the suite to convey the venue's unique design aesthetic. "The hotel's retro-luxe vibe {courtesy of Jonathan Adler} combines wild colors with desert-y whites and tans, layered with multiple patterns and textures," Laura said. We're completely over-the-moon for the chevron marbled paper and makeup-y peach tones... In fact, we want to host a little soiree just to use this suite! Party at the Merci New York studio, anyone?!

It's really a beautiful car and very pleasing to look at : indeed, the orange is very shiny, which makes it look beautiful in the magnificent city of Cannes!! :)

Title: #4/5: Lamborghinis Run Orange County-Laguna-Newport scenery!
Despite the fires affecting parts of OC, we went out to enjoy the beautiful day in OC, SoCal.
I found this little gem of a video on YouTube. It was made by two young women in the Philippines for a school project. Its kind of long at 8 minutes, but the first 2 minutes are well worth viewing
Essentially, these young women capture the essence of a destination wedding. Do you want to get married in a stodgy church? Or do you want to do something fun?
