Monday Musings with Myra Callan of Twigs + Honey

por | | 0 comments

Whenever we are styling brides, we often turn to the beautiful work of Twigs & Honey. Owner and designer Myra Callan always amazes us with a constantly evolving array of creative, whimsical and romantic pieces... There's truly something to suit the taste of every girl we work with.
Today I'm thrilled to share a few gorgeous items from Myra's latest campaign, as well our recent, in-depth conversation. After a quick glimpse at the beautiful images below, it's easy to see that Twigs & Honey is something special. So to sweeten the pot a bit, we asked Myra about the development of her line, her daily muses and inspirations, and how the whole creative concept came to fruition. I'm always so intrigued by the "how you got there" questions - and I think you will love her answers.
twigs and honey myra callan hair piecesHow do you believe the Twigs & Honey concept came to fruition?
I grew up in Oregon and was smitten with wildlife and nature from the beginning. I ended up pursuing an educational path that would foster these interests. I suppose I’d always liked pretty little things and fashion as well and my two different major interests in life came to a head while planning my 9-8-7 wedding to now hubby, Matt. After the wedding, I was still on such a creative high that I didn’t want to let that completely go and creating Twigs & Honey really allowed me to never let it go!
twigs and honey myra callan hair piecesCan you share some tidbits about your daily life?
I like running, yes like it, but I don’t have much time lately for that. I love going to the movies and the bookstore with my hubby. I enjoy gardening and playing with our Siberian husky, Indy. I also go out with family for some stress relieving target shooting from time to time {I’m sure that’s a surprise!}. My favorite movie of all-time is Labyrinth, though the recent Inception is a close second. I’ve also seen every episode of The Office at least once, emphasis on “at least”...

What inspired you to develop your brand?
I was inspired to develop Twigs & Honey by the enjoyment I received through creating pieces. I loved the idea of creating little bits of art you could wear and sharing it with the world. I also loved providing pieces for individuals wanting something unique and lovely.
twigs and honey myra callan hair piecesWhat was missing in the market that Twigs & Honey fulfills?
When I first began my Etsy shop in January of 2008, there weren’t a ton of head piece makers on Etsy and Etsy itself wasn’t that old. I literally did an extensive search through the site to make sure that what I was creating was going to be new, fresh and original and not just what was already being done. After that, I wanted to provide a line of products that would be vintage and nature inspired but completely modern interpretations focusing on fine materials and craftsmanship. As time went on and more and more people started to jump on the head piece making bandwagon, I kept moving my brand into one that focused on technique and uniqueness. Most of my flowers (with the exception of some small vintage and reproduction vintage flowers) are completely made from scratch. Most of my pieces are hand sewn with good old needle and thread. I don’t’ even own a hot glue gun. I wanted to provide a product to the market that was lovely, stylish, unique and well-made and that’s about it!
twigs and honey myra callan hair piecesWhat initially sparked the Twigs & Honey concept?
I began making small hair accessories in junior high because something always fascinated me about hair pretties and being 13, I couldn’t afford any from the store. I kept it as a hobby for years and for our 2007 wedding, I decided to DIY my hair piece and those of my bridesmaids (along with the boutonnieres and bouquets). I received a very positive response from friends and family and loved creating them so much that I decided to launch a little Etsy shop in January of 2008. After I made a sale in the first few days, I was hooked and things took off from there.

What do you like most about your job?
Twigs & Honey gives me a creative outlet. I am a busy body and I have so many ideas bursting out of my head that Twigs & Honey really gives me an arena to let all that creative energy out into the world. I love that everyday is different. Most days are crammed with work from the early morning into the late night and right through the weekends, but it doesn’t feel like “work” since it’s really a passion. I also love all the talented and sweet people I get to work with and meet. I feel very lucky!
twigs and honey myra callan hair piecesWhere to you draw everyday inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from just about everywhere. More objectively, I gather a ton of inspiration every morning from my favorite blogs. More abstractly, I gather inspiration from the world around me. I love the environment and studied it for years so it’s hard not to have that influence my designs. A couple times a month or more, I dive into a stack of magazines at the bookstore and I love great wardrobe in movies and runway fashion. I like looking at high fashion dresses and blouses and then thinking to myself, “How can I make that into a head piece?”

Why should we tell Merci New York's readers to buy your {oh-so-pretty} products?
Twigs & Honey pieces are designed for individuals wanting an extra special something to complete their look, whether it is a bridal look or an everyday outfit. The pieces are handmade with love, care and attention to detail and we use the finest materials and vintage findings.twigs and honey myra callan hair piecesWhere did your company begin? Where is it located now? Where are your products sold?
Twigs & Honey, LLC made its humble beginning in Keizer, Oregon in an apartment with a lakeside view! It is now located in our home studio in Salem, Oregon. Our products are sold in our online stores: shop.twigsandhoney.com & myrakim.etsy.com. They are also sold at The English Dept. in Portland, Oregon, Lovely Bridal Shop in NYC, and Bella Bridesmaids boutiques nationwide.
You can keep up with Twigs and Honey news on our Facebook page and blog, too!

Save the Dates

por | | 0 comments

“Save the dates,” or STDs, are becoming increasingly popular for all weddings, but they can be particularly useful for destination weddings since guests may need extra time to make travel plans and take time off work. They are typically very brief, listing the couple’s names, wedding date and sometimes the location, simply informing guests to “save the date.” For traditional weddings, STDs are often sent out about four months ahead of the wedding. For destination weddings, timing can be as early as six to eight months in advance. We sent ours out about nine months in advance—September for our June wedding.

STDs can take a variety of forms and are often much less formal than a traditional invite. They Save the Datesare usually creative and designed to catch a guest’s attention. Options used frequently include: a photo booth-esque strip featuring multiple photos of the couple, a postcard or tourist guide from the destination, a card showing a week’s forecast of sunny skies, a passport holder, a luggage tag, or just about anything tropical one could imagine. Because we wanted something fun that would set the tone for our largely informal wedding, we decided to go with a magnet that showed a beach scene and all the applicable details for our wedding (same as the picture; although this is not ours). With the magnet, we included a card that listed the URL of our wedding website where guests could read more about the Bahamas and our hotel and get all the information they would need to travel to the wedding. The STDs helped build a lot of excitement in advance of the wedding, and it was a great way to let people know about the website too. Nearly a year after our wedding, people mention that they still have the magnet on their fridge.

Our vendor, Magnet Queen, came highly recommended from a number of other brides on The Knot. The magnets were high quality, and the company representatives were very kind and responsive, even going out of their way to let us know that they had miscalculated a discount, so we would be charged less than we thought. We had the opportunity to view a proof before the magnets were printed, and we were very satisfied with the service we received. Another very popular vendor among Knot brides is VistaPrint. Though we didn’t use them, we heard positive feedback about the quality of their products as well.

Title: Jeff & Erin's EPIC Wedding Trailer: Save the Date

We created this EPIC wedding trailer as our Save-the-Date. It's a parody of action movie trailers, with every cliche we could think of. Sorry for the terrible acting. For the full effect, turn up the sound... way up! Enjoy!

P.S. We thought most of the music clips would be instantly recognizeable, but a lot of people have been asking about them, so here they are in order of appearance:

Title: Flirty Date Makeup- Ask Me Makeup with Amy B

All the guys I know, and the guys I've dated have always remarked that they would like to see the girl their dating with little or no makeup. Keeping this idea in mind, I came up with a look that appeases both the girls and the guys. We still get to wear makeup and look sassy, but keep it in natural tones for the boys.

This video is about how to be glamorous yet keep your makup low-key and simple on those first few dates. It's all about shimmery eyes, glossy rosebud lips and flirty eyes.

My next video will be on how to apply false eyelashes, and how to get that Old Hollywood Glam look.

Makeup used in this video:
* Mac Studiofix foundation #35
* Mac press powder
* Napoleon concealer
* Mac "Foolish Me" Sheertone Shimmer Blush
* Napoleon lip pencil in "Sand"
* Maybelline Wet Shine Diamonds Liquid in "Marquise Peach no 10)
* Napoleon off white eye shadow for eye base
* Napoleon warm brown eyeshadow

Chic Vendor Spotlight: poppies + posies

por | | 0 comments

What happens when two creative ladies move to the Big Apple, meet by chance and share a love for design, florals and parties? Why sparks fly, of course... creativity abounds... and {lucky us!} the ever-bright and beautiful poppies & posies is born. Now a well-known event and floral design company nestled in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, owners Sierra and Juliet sat down with Merci New York to chat about their fabulous craft...Chic Vendor Spotlight: poppies + posiesSo tell our readers how this all began...
This is truly the smallest big city out there! At the time, Juliet was working in the product design department at Martha Stewart, I was an event coordinator, and we shared a mutual friend, so we met by chance and realized we shared so many interests. I have this funny little memory of sitting down together in this tiny wine bar in Brooklyn to have our first convo about starting an events company. It’s been really fun working beside her for the past few years and building poppies & posies together...we have shared a lot of laughs and of course a few tears too.
Chic Vendor Spotlight: poppies + posiesWere you inspired by particular events or experiences?
Both of us were inspired by our childhoods, families, and most recently by this extraordinary city we live in. Juliet spent a lot of time as a child gardening with her father and I know this had a big impact on her life. My mom is an entrepreneur and I use to help out in her store as a kid. Seeing my mom build a successful business has definitely encouraged me to pursue what I love and believe that it is possible.
Lately, we have been inspired by all of the incredibly talented people and companies in this city - their work always inspires us to create unique florals and décor elements for our clients.
Chic Vendor Spotlight: poppies + posiesHow would you describe your aesthetic?
When we're brainstorming ideas for a wedding design, we both draw inspiration from country gardens and vintage items. We're like two kids in a candy store when we're antiquing. Sometimes we go just to see what we'll find and what ideas we might come up with from looking at all of the glass bottles, tins and crates.

What sets poppies & posies apart from the rest?
We’re very hands on. We take pride in the personal attention that Juliet and I both give to each client. 99% of the time we’re both present at all of our client meetings, we work side by side on all of the floral and event designs, and we hand make all of our décor elements whenever possible. This gives each wedding a personal touch that you might not find elsewhere.

Bhumi and Vimal

por | | 0 comments

Vimal is part of the Indian percussion drum group, called Tabla Dhol, so it's only fitting that music was important in their wedding. Bhumi and Vimal had a traditional Indian wedding ceremony, which was held at the Holiday Inn Skokie.

They started outside with the Groom's procession, led by dhol drummers and all their family/friends. Inside, Bhumi made quite an entrance (see trailer). After the ceremony, the Bride's family said goodbye to them. Their reception was full of bhangra music, dancers, and performances. The night was topped off when Vimal grabbed the dhol drum and played along with bhangra tunes, mixed by the extremely talented Pardeep of Monu Creative Sounds. Enjoy this Indian wedding video trailer as it captures the more emotional parts of their day.

gifts for the hostess {with the mostess}Last night we received an email from a reader asking if we would share hostess gift ideas for an holiday party. "{The hostess} received everything imaginable from her recent wedding. I want to bring something stylish and thoughtful, but I'm at a total loss. Can you help?" our reader wrote. Needless to say, we were in. We're not sure what we love more, super-interactive readers or sharing some fabulous finds.

All of our featured selections are easily purchased either around the city or on the Web, just in time for this weekend's holiday soirees. Or, {as many a mom would attest} it never hurts to stash a few for the future. Worst case scenario? You're "stuck" with some pretty posh treasures... or some fab new ideas for your own wedding registry.

From top: Missoni bathrobe and towel; Vosges "haute chocolate" champagne and truffle set; all-season peony arrangement {love local Poppies & Posies}; Michael Wainwright breadbasket; New Arcadia tumblers {or as a festive set}; Juliska bedside carafe; Molton Brown cleanse bar set.

Island Wedding Overviews

por | | 0 comments

A destination wedding can be just about anything you want it to be from the two of you and an officiant on the beach to a full-scale church wedding complete with 10 attendants, a gospel choir and an opulent reception, or anything in the middle.

Many hotels and resorts in the Caribbean have wedding packages now, some of which even come free with a seven-night stay, such as Sandals popular Weddingmoon™. If that option isn’t enough, you can choose one of Preston Bailey’s four customized weddings that offer various provisions including specific flowers, table settings and aisle treatments. One hotel we considered, the Wyndham Bermuda Resort & Spa (now under renovation), offered decoration options up to $130 per table for linen overlays and a replica lighthouse. Wyndham has a great website to find out more information about its wedding offerings.

Many hotels offer a modest basic package which can be supplemented based on the couple’s preferences. When you are considering where to have your wedding, it is important to keep your options and preferences in mind. Some hotels require a minimum wedding size to allow you to have a private reception—if you have fewer than 20 guests, your reception may have to be in a restaurant on the property. Certain hotels may require that you use a staff photographer or contracted musicians whose work may not be what you would hope for. In some instances, an all-inclusive may also limit your options for food and location choices. Make sure to know your options and limitations as you explore where you want to get married.

When we were deciding where to go for our wedding, we knew we wanted a decent range of choices that we could customize to be appropriate for our tastes, our guests, the vibe we wanted and our budget. We wanted something that would feel like our wedding. After briefly trying to work with the unresponsive wedding coordinators used by our hotel at the time, we discovered an independent wedding planner who offered everything we needed and had the local resources to help us plan every aspect of our wedding the way we wanted. While some destination wedding couples have had great experiences with wedding coordinators at their hotels, working with an independent contractor (assuming that you have sufficient recommendations) may be easier because their reputation is at stake in the planning of your wedding, so they may be both more responsive and more flexible. Our great wedding planner on Grand Bahama Island is Janet Albury at And The Two Become One.
