I love everything about this couple, their fabulously cute {click to read} story, their amazing chemistry, their jaunt along the Hudson River and through Greenwich Village. I love it all. The shoot really tells such a warm and cozy tale about being young and in love in New York.
About the photographer: Betsy Van Langen grew up as somewhat of a paparazzi within her home, yet didn't take her first photography class until she was an undergraduate at Loyola College in Maryland. After graduating in 2008 with a degree in Fine Arts, she attended the Post Baccalaureate Program at Maryland Institute College of Art. She is currently getting her Masters in Photography at Rutgers University. Her fine arts background allows her to mix creative and stylistic elements with timeless and classic imagery... As a kid, she always wanted to created pictures that people would keep and love forever. Now she does just that.

“Something old, something new – and everything over the top.”—This is the bigger-is-better idea. Although, the article seems to paint the need for a wedding planner as a negative. We don’t see it that way. We’re busy professionals and needed the help.
“You say you need a reference? Well, you’re looking at her.”—This one is true. We found a number of self-proclaimed wedding planners. Some seemed great. Others just seemed clueless.
“I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you calm, cool and oblivious.”—This is the best. A good wedding planner can insulate you from the drama. Chances are good, there will be enough drama (between families, etc.)…you really don’t need any more.
“I won’t necessarily be there on your big day.”—And this is a big mistake. If your planner intends to phone it in, find another planner. And “venue coordinators” were completely worthless for us. Venue coordinators were the whole reason we hired a planner in the first place. We were going to a luxury destination thousands of miles away, we couldn’t hold their hand.
“Congratulations, Gloria and Bill…um, I mean Marcia and Tom”—There’s no getting around the revolving door, especially at destination resorts. However, you planner should absolutely focus on you and make sure the resort does. Again, another vote against venue coordinators and for wedding planners.
“Mixed marriage? Ka-ching!”—This is interesting, but wasn’t really relevant. We are from very different religious backgrounds, but religion wasn’t very important to us. However, it may be different for you.
“The early bride gets the worm.”—This is where traditional weddings and destination weddings differ. In the destination world, planners and venues don’t really want to work with you over a year in advance. We found one that did. We were worried when she seemed a little unresponsive a few months out, but needed to take a few deep breaths and realize she does this all the time. We’re glad we relaxed!
“Getting married in Hawaii? I’ll bring the suntan lotion!”—Destination weddings are big business. This one discusses hiring planners local to you to plan the destination event—not really a good idea. Find a planner that is local to the destination since they will have the contacts. Also, there is a flawed premise here that destination weddings are somehow more expensive. We could not disagree more!
“Custom silk wedding fans, anyone?”—Sure there are vendors who will try to push stuff on you. There always are. You still need to make the event your own.
“You don’t really need me.”—True, you don’t NEED a wedding planner. But it sure made our lives easier.

What happens when two creative ladies move to the Big Apple, meet by chance and share a love for design, florals and parties? Why sparks fly, of course... creativity abounds... and {lucky us!} the ever-bright and beautiful poppies & posies is born. Now a well-known event and floral design company nestled in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, owners Sierra and Juliet sat down with Merci New York to chat about their fabulous craft...So tell our readers how this all began... This is truly the smallest big city out there! At the time, Juliet was working in the product design department at Martha Stewart, I was an event coordinator, and we shared a mutual friend, so we met by chance and realized we shared so many interests. I have this funny little memory of sitting down together in this tiny wine bar in Brooklyn to have our first convo about starting an events company. It’s been really fun working beside her for the past few years and building poppies & posies together...we have shared a lot of laughs and of course a few tears too. Were you inspired by particular events or experiences? Both of us were inspired by our childhoods, families, and most recently by this extraordinary city we live in. Juliet spent a lot of time as a child gardening with her father and I know this had a big impact on her life. My mom is an entrepreneur and I use to help out in her store as a kid. Seeing my mom build a successful business has definitely encouraged me to pursue what I love and believe that it is possible. Lately, we have been inspired by all of the incredibly talented people and companies in this city - their work always inspires us to create unique florals and décor elements for our clients. How would you describe your aesthetic? When we're brainstorming ideas for a wedding design, we both draw inspiration from country gardens and vintage items. We're like two kids in a candy store when we're antiquing. Sometimes we go just to see what we'll find and what ideas we might come up with from looking at all of the glass bottles, tins and crates.
What sets poppies & posies apart from the rest? We’re very hands on. We take pride in the personal attention that Juliet and I both give to each client. 99% of the time we’re both present at all of our client meetings, we work side by side on all of the floral and event designs, and we hand make all of our décor elements whenever possible. This may be a silly question, but have you seen issue #4 of Nonpareil Magazine? It totally rocks and needless to say, Merci New York was thrilled to be a part of it! I had an amazing time styling the Mad Men inspired spread shot by Whitney and Dustin of Oh Darling Photography, and loved dreaming up other "big-day, small-details" for the shoot, such as DIY mint julep favors {with custom printables!} and a retro "lunch box" welcome guest gift. But the most fun came from propping my family's vintage car, and having the help and hard work of my close family and friends on set. So before I share some fab pics... A big, big thank you to my dad- who brought his {other} baby, my great grandmother's classic 1966 Chevelle, and trusted me to doll it to pure 60s wedding perfection. It totally drove home the theme... {no pun intended}. And of courseto my husband, Michael Weppner, and good friend Annie Soderstrom, who posed as our fabulous Draper-esque couple and allowed me to play Barbie with them all morning... You guys were amazing! Thank you's complete, I'd love to share a few unpublished shots of Merci New York's work on the shoot! These projects really spoke to what the business-end of our company is all about- making sure that little wedding details are wonderfully smashing... Enjoy!I wanted to work with "inspired" fashion that didn't appear costumed. Michael is wearing an Armani suit, Canali shirt, vintage tie and Gucci loafers. Annie's gorgeous retro-inspired dress was pulled from one of my favorite designers of the moment, Prabal Gurung, and was accented with a vintage fabric flower from my styling kit. Her shoes are from J Crew. Accessories: luggage from Janelle Sing, bouquet by Poppies + Posies.The fedora is also vintage, from my styling kit. I just love this car. As a classic 60s "muscle car," my dad's 1966 Chevelle has been featured in period films such as American Gangster, Driving in Cars with Boys, and Spike Lee's Crooklyn, to name a few. Because it's not as typical as other vintage cars, grooms love it. It's rented often for events within the NYC area {feel free to email me for details}.Staging a location can be tricky. Here, I wanted to show the red door of a firehouse on 77th and Amsterdam. Of course, this was an active driveway, and moments after we perfectly positioned the car and cans, sirens rang and the trucks needed to rush out. But the few shots we had were great. I designed this "Mix a Mint Julep" favor as a crafty nod to Mad Men's frequent mixology -the shape, textures and polish of this design would make it the perfect placesetting as well.... Pop by Nonpareil for the step by step DIY, as well as Merci New York's great printable cocktail card. It's sweet, and delicious!The idea behind the fashion styling was to keep the looks "60s inspired", but not too costume-y. In lieu of a tight chingon or overdone hair, we elected to keep Annie's hair softly tousled, and let the dramatic dress do the talking. Out of town welcome gifts and baskets have become a staple at many weddings, and they were the focus of Merci New York's styling business in its early development. We always try to create stylized, unique details for our welcome gifts. They're your guests' first impression of your wedding, so it makes sense to give them a taste of what's to come. The foods inside the retro lunch box are all sixties inspired, and the welcome note marries back to the theme as well. Content details and how-tos are located at Nonpareil. I truly adore the chic decor and uptown panache of The Surrey. I had the pleasure of previewing the newly renovated hotel during a Net-a-Porter press event last month, and reminisced about its dove gray decor after running a post on Monique Lhuillier's home similarly-hued home earlier this week... Simply stated, the hotel is gorgeous. If you're hosting an uptown wedding, it's well worth considering this spot for your out-of-town guests. Take a look... Sitting along a quiet Upper East Side block, the Surrey looks more like an inviting apartment building than a hotel... Many of the 190 guest rooms have private terraces with views of Central Park, but those without views can meander onto the rooftop garden, which affords gorgeous treetop views {and stunning pre-wedding photo opportunities}. Ah the bar... {always an important consideration for certain post-reception cocktails}. Bar Pleiades, brainchild of Cameron Bogue, sits along the hotel lobby and is known for it's delish custom coktails. It also plays neighbor to in-house restaurant Cafe Boulud {yes, that's Daniel Boulud's elegant famed French restaurant}. Both dining options are impossibly polished and tre-uptown chic. The Spa at the Surrey is exceptional- the treatment rooms are soothingly dusted in the hotel's signature dove gray, and furnished with luxe Darphin products. The polished simplicity is so perfect for pre-wedding pampering.All of The Surrey's guest rooms are equally luxurious, with Duxiana beds, Sferra linens and a expansive pillow menu that puts most hotels to shame. In previous postings (see Our Destination Wedding), we discussed the specifics our destination wedding experience, but never really reviewed the venue – the Westin/Sheraton Our Lucaya resort on Grand Bahama Island.
Our destination wedding decision was driven by several factors. We knew we wanted a tropical island. We knew we wanted a place that had fantastic scuba diving. And we knew it needed to be economical for our guests. It took us months of going through various venues in The Bahamas, Mexico, Cayman Islands and Aruba. After much discussion, we settled on Our Lucaya Resort in The Bahamas. (See Making Our Ultimate Destination Wedding Decision)
Early on, we contacted the Our Lucaya Resort directly and found out they had wedding planners onsite called Seashells Weddings Our Lucaya [Note: The company appears to no longer be in business or affiliated with Our Lucaya Resort…which means our information is very dated. So take our comments as a historical perspective.] Unfortunately, we found the folks at Our Lucaya/Seashells to be terribly unresponsive. By coincidence, we found that there was an independent wedding planner through someone on The Knot message boards. We reached out to Janet at And The Two Become One, an independent wedding planner on Grand Bahama Island. Good thing we did, she was fantastic. Because of this experience, we’re big fans of hiring local wedding planners to help you in the process (see Covering The Basics – Hiring a Local Wedding Planner).
Despite this rather rocky beginning, we absolutely LOVED the Our Lucaya resort. We stayed on the Westin side because it was a little nicer. A few guests stayed at the Westin, but most of our guests stayed at the Sheraton. No matter where you stay, you’ll have the run of the property…and the quaint little Lucaya village across the street (which is more like a golf cart crossing that an “street”). There are about 5 or 6 restaurants on-property (which can be expensive) and quite a few across the street, which are more reasonable.
Recently, we found a video on YouTube from the Our Lucaya Resort. Believe it or not, we actually think this video does a pretty bad job selling the property. The resort is extremely beautiful and has many, many wonderful wedding sites, including the gazebos, the Great Lawn and the beach. The inside locations are nice, but if you’re in The Bahamas, don’t you want to get married outside?
Again, while we found the Sheshells wedding contractors at Our Lucaya to be unresponsive, it seems like things have changed at the resort.

We took a hidden camera to the Westin Grand Bahama at our Lucya to give you the "real" review. You will see the rooms, the beach, the pools, restaurants and gym all while no one is looking.
Vimal is part of the Indian percussion drum group, called Tabla Dhol, so it's only fitting that music was important in their wedding. Bhumi and Vimal had a traditional Indian wedding ceremony, which was held at the Holiday Inn Skokie.
They started outside with the Groom's procession, led by dhol drummers and all their family/friends. Inside, Bhumi made quite an entrance (see trailer). After the ceremony, the Bride's family said goodbye to them. Their reception was full of bhangra music, dancers, and performances. The night was topped off when Vimal grabbed the dhol drum and played along with bhangra tunes, mixed by the extremely talented Pardeep of Monu Creative Sounds. I love everything about this couple, their fabulously cute {click to read} story, their amazing chemistry, their jaunt along the Hudson River and through Greenwich Village. I love it all. The shoot really tells such a warm and cozy tale about being young and in love in New York.
