Selecting Your Destination Wedding Photographer

por | | 0 comments

Selecting Your Destination Wedding Photographer
Selecting your destination wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you can make. There’s no “do overs” on your wedding photos. And, unlike catering, there’s less margin for error. So, you really only have one shot of getting it right.

Adding to the complexity, chances are very good that you won’t find the resident talent that you are looking for in the wedding destination of your choice. We’ve blogged on this before in Covering The Basics – Photographer, but you should count on hiring and bringing your own photographer with you.

Today on WeddingBee, Joe Milton of the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers has an interesting posting on Top Five Questions to Ask Your Photographer. Now, one thing we’ve learned is that there are more “wedding photography associations” than you can shake a stick at. Some reputable, some not – so do your homework.

But Joe Milton poses some very good questions (these are his questions, but our commentary):
  1. Can I read through the contract? – If not, run far and fast. The contract should be clear and articulate what is expected of both parties…including deadlines! Photographers are notorious for getting you to sign the contract and then take FOREVER to deliver the goods.

  2. Can I see some sample albums of complete weddings? If not, run far and fast. Every photographer can get a good picture or two, but you want to see the whole process. Any good photographer should be able to show you lots of quality work.

  3. How much experience do you have? The more weddings they’ve done, but the better they will probably be. This is crucial in destination weddings as many “native” photographers are just Sunday afternoon amateurs. You want a pro.

  4. How much direction or posing do you do during the day? Some photographers are photojournalist only. Some only do posed shots. For us, we liked the mix. Of our favorites, they were “posed.” Or rather, our photographer gave direction (walk up this staircase, walk down the beach this way) and then she captured the moment. Those were our favorites. But some of the most meaningful “moments” were the candids (the bride’s grandmother walking her down the aisle because she is now paralyzed).

  5. Do you have insurance? Any decent photographer will, so this is not the definitive question that many might think.

This is a good list. But after reading it, the questions seem very elementary. They will only help you rule “bad apples” and will do nothing to help you select from a small pool of 3-5 truly professional photographers. To this rather basic list, we have added our own list of “must ask” questions:

  • Can I speak with a couple who’s wedding you have shot in the last six months? – If a photographer is unable or unwilling to provide a list of references for you to check out, this is a problem. It also surprised us that this should be “in the bag” for the photographer. Yet, we had photographers provide us with references that were negative, so it’s worth going through the process.

  • How much experience do you have with the location/venue/type that I having? - No wedding photographer will have done exactly what you are doing, but have they done something similar? If they haven’t done a Jewish ceremony or a beach wedding, it might be a problem for you.

  • What is your typical method? – In our professional capacity, we both hire a lot of vendors. We are a big fan of asking very broad, open-ended questions like this. It gets the photographer talking about his/her work broadly. The good ones should be able to string together a story that makes sense. Those new to the business or who are “weekend warriors” will stumble on this kind of broad, open-ended question.

  • Do you bring an assistant? – This is useful to know. Will they be doing all the work themselves, or farming it out? If bringing an assistant, try to get a clear picture on what that person’s role may be. And remember, this will also increase your cost factors.

  • How many different cameras do you bring? – In other words, will they be switching back and forth and might miss the moment. Or, will they have back-up with them in case something goes wrong? It’s important.

  • Film vs digital? – In this age of digital everything, there are some photographers that sill do film (believe it or not). So ask.

  • How long before we see proofs? – This is self explanatory.

  • How long before we get our actual album? – Also self explanatory.

  • Who covers your expenses? – This is a point of negotiation. Ideally, it’s better for both you and photographer if you cover the expenses. It’s better for the photographer because they are not out of pocket on anything. It’s better for you because the photographer will probably charge a mark-up fee (some percentage of the actual cost; so a $700 airline ticket to the Bahamas marked up 15% will actually cost you $805).

  • What is your mark-up fee (both for out of pocket travel and also for stock/equipment)? – The photographer should be absolutely honest about this up front. In our experience, too many photographers use this as a “back end” profit center and you have no idea how bad you will get hit until the final bill arrives.

Finally, it’s not a question, but it’s worth stating: actually meet with your photographer once or twice before the wedding. It sounds obvious, but many couples have been known to hire a photographer sight unseen because they found them on some website and their work looked good. This is especially common where destination wedding photographers can live all over the country and fly into the wedding. Try to find a way to meet first and take a temperature check.

From Paris with Love | A Destination Venue in France: Le Pré Catelan

por | | 0 comments

We are happy to welcome back Amélie, Merci's Special Markets Editor, who continues to report from Paris on the latest French wedding inspirations... Today, Amélie shares an exquisite Parisian venue with Merci New York's readers: Le Pré Catelan, a palatial retreat, located steps from the Champs Elysées...
From Paris with Love | A Destination Venue in France: Le Pré CatelanWho said a destination wedding has to take place on a Caribbean island? I have recently discovered a destination venue in Paris that would make you think twice.
Hidden in the middle of the woods, yet a few minutes away from the Champs Elysées, there is a gorgeous Napoleon III building called “Le Pré Catelan. How unexpected is it to find such a beautiful and peaceful place so close to the city?

From Paris with Love | A Destination Venue in France: Le Pré CatelanThe beautiful property is owned by Lenôtre {yes, the same Lenôtre as the Pièce Montée I disclosed a few weeks ago}... The space is full of history, filled with 14 salons, and is perfect to host the chicest receptions, where Lenôtre’s finest and inventive French Cuisine is served along with some of the world’s best wines.
The location is great and the food is divine, but if you are not already smitten by Le Pré Catelan, the interior design will definitely do its effect.
Take a peek at this gorgeous venue... the crystal chandelier, high ceiling and hall of mirrors are typical of French castles. From Paris with Love | A Destination Venue in France: Le Pré CatelanAs if Les Salons du Le Pré Catelan were not enchanting enough, Lenôtre works hand in hand with some of Paris' most talented designers to customize the receptions with wonderfully elaborate decor plans. Here are some examples of on-site floral table designs that seem to come straight out of a fairytale...From Paris with Love | A Destination Venue in France: Le Pré CatelanFrom Paris with Love | A Destination Venue in France: Le Pré CatelanFrom Paris with Love | A Destination Venue in France: Le Pré CatelanDestination weddings are so often paired with a sunny locale and a barefooted bride on the beach, that we tend to forget many of the other fabulous venues all around the world. Les Salons du Pré Catelan would certainly be the ideal location for a grandiose destination wedding in Paris…

Needless to say, the prices are a bit grandiose as well... If you are not ready to break your piggy bank, we hope you've at least found some wonderful inspiration in Les Salons du Pré Catelan's gorgeous intetiros and inventive tablescape designs!

Party Tips from the B-List | Wedding Ideas

por | | 0 comments

As you've probably noticed around the wedding blogging world, we've all posted quite a bit about our experiences at the B-List conference in DC. I did mention I would chime in a bit more, so here's another little sneak peek with a new perspective: Some tips and tricks from the B List party that can easily fold into your wedding day details.
After all, it must be pretty intense to plan a party for wedding vendors and bloggers and still showcase some fresh ideas. Let's take a look at what the sponsors presented...
B List Wedding BloggersPerhaps my favorite detail: A prosecco bar. Each station showcased a different prosecco-based cocktail - this one included a pretty fresh herb display. Guests hand picked the herbs and added them to their bubbly. It was such a fresh presentation and would be a perfect accent to a summer wedding.B List Wedding BloggersSmall raw bar bites and bud vases of fresh spring blooms strategically placed along the food displays. Simple and sweet, but never under appreciated at any cocktail hour.Party Tips from the B-List | Wedding IdeasI loved this place setting, complete with a bowl vase of white and green blooms that matched the dinnerware. It was both elegant and fresh; and would make a perfect placecard for a smaller soiree.B List Wedding BloggersMore from the prosecco bar: This station lured guests with a new prosecco and a splash of their favorite fresh fruit juices or nectar. So chic and indulgent. {And of course, stacked cake stands always make for a dramatic dessert display, especially when placed atop illuminated glass tables}.B List Wedding BloggersTry this: Instead of signature cocktails, name your passed hors d' oeuvres for special guests, locales or occassions that are important to you. Here, each plate was named after one of the wedding bloggers at the conference. Nole's tuna tartare was delish!B List Wedding BloggersInstallation as decoration: The party was held at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria, an art center complete with open studios and galleries. This installation of pretty white dresses was currently on display at the venue, but the white dresses almost appeared to be part of the wedding theme. The tip? Let your venue work for you. Be sure to play up its unique accents and selling points to avoid over-decorating your space.
Party Tips from the B-List | Wedding IdeasPhoto booths are great fun {but you knew that already}... Here's a pic of some of your favorite bloggers hamming it up for Smilebooth. I'll pop back in later to tag everyone, but yes, that's me cheesing on the lower left.B List Wedding BloggersFor more great photos from the B-List, be sure to check out the B-List site and the posts from the other bloggers. A full list of sponsors can be found on our previous post, here.

Style File: Bergorf Goodman's Holiday Gifts for Your Groom

por | | 0 comments

One for you.... okay, one for me too. Two for you, oh well, hey, why not... two for me. And this for me. And this for you, no me.
And so the holiday shopping season begins.

bergdorf-goodman-charvet-tom-ford-nixon-vilebrequin-deakin and francis-santiago-gonzalez-vintage-holiday-groom-gift-merci-new-yorkWith amazing holiday catalogs squeezing their way into the city-dweller's mailbox so early in the season, it's hard not to be just a {teeny} bit selfish. Case in point? The oh-my-god-its-absolutely-amazing Bergdorf Goodman holiday catalog. I received a press copy a few weeks ago and couldn't edit all the goodness down to one streamlined {or bridal-specific} story, so I opted for a big "oh, the hell with it," and decided to do a little mini-series of Merci's favorite items. Just to show that we're not too selfish, we'll start with the guys....
From killer cuff links to sultry scents, bold bathing suits to barware worthy of a Mad Men mixer, the buyers at The Men's Store at Bergdorf Goodman have got your man covered this holiday season.
Our stylists' tip? Don't just think about X-Mas. The holidays are a great time to knock out your groom's gift, too. Chances are the pickings won't be so fruitful {or creative} come June, so the holidays are the best time to buy and stash for your hubby-to-be!

1. Black woven silk ties with silver thread by Charvet; 2. Sterling silver and hand painted enamel "Winking Owl" cuff links by Jan Leslie; 3. Colonia Essenza for men Eau de Cologne spray by Aqua di Parma; 4. {our favorite} 18-karat gold cuff links with ruby eyes by Deakin and Francis; 5. Multicolor nylon "VIP" swimsuit with embroidery by Vilebrequin; 6. Crystal decanters and silverplated funnel by William Yeoward; 7. Automatic watch with black dial on black crocodile strap by Nixon; 8. Crocodile grooming case in gray or black by Santiago Gonzalez; 9. Limited Edition Tuscan Leather Collection by Tom Ford.
All items available for the Holiday 2010 season by contacting Bergdorf Goodman at 212 339 3311.

Title: How To Download and Transfer MIDI & Style Files

This video will guide you through the process of downloading and transferring files to your keyboard.

Title: Bluesette - Latin Style - Tutorial

Midi file of my piano playing on this video along with a notation file and the Backing Track file are all available on my website at http://www.Lot2learn.com

I had just finished listening to a great Latin-style version of Bluesette by the great Toots Thielman here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85c6siV5Z94 so I decided I would try a version in 4/4 time with a Latin groove as well.

I have added some annotations but I will try to explain more here in the description.
First, I have been asked to try and "slow-down" my playing to make it easier to learn. Unfortunately, when I improvise all of this I do so in real-time and to try and slow it down, well...it just wouldn't come out the same at all.

Here are some basic rules to follow: Know the song and the melody well enough that you can wander away from it and come back to it at will. Having said that, I actually make a mistake during my solo and play over the wrong chords. However, I do so quickly and without stumbling. I "go with the flow" and calmly bring myself back to the right place and if I didn't point it out, it might go by unnoticed - except for those keen observers out there - you know who you are ;-).

I play mostly chord tones, arpeggiating a minor 9 chord for the minor 7th chords and I approach the C-7 from 1/2 step above playing a Db-9. I also throw in a few 4ths and pentatonic type lines that are usually based on any pentatonic scale that contains chord tones of the II-V progression for the particular measure within the song.

I use patterns, but try to stay away from playing anything that resembles a scale. I will use scales, ie. diminished, but use neighboring notes. I also use "enclosures" when outlining arpeggiated chord tones.

BTW - one of my favorite parts of this video is the rhythmic chording starting at about the 3:35 mark and then the right hand lines that come a little after that - it's like saving the best for last. ;-)

Tech Notes:
Roland FP-4 using internal sound bank. MIDI keys by PGMusic PowerTracks Pro software and captured with BB Flashback Pro software from Blueberry Software. Rebdered using Adobe Premier elements and Serif MoviePlus X3. Backing Track created using Band-in-a-box software.

Thanks for Listening!

Monique Lhuillier Resort 2011 | Honeymoon Fashion

por | | 0 comments

Let's be honest. I would have slept in my Monique Lhuillier wedding gown if I could. I would have worn it on the plane, sashayed through Santorini, and partied all night in Mykonos wrapped in it's layers upon layers of tulle. I've never felt prettier than I did wearing that dress.
And truly, had Monique Lhuillier been designing daytime Resort when I got married, I would have rationalized buying her entire collection for our honeymoon. Especially if it looked like this.
monique lhuillier resort 2011monique lhuillier resort 2011monique lhuillier resort 2011monique lhuillier resort 2011The Monique Lhuillier for Resort 2011 collection was shown in New York this week and truly, I don't think it could get any more gorgeous. The simple, pretty, but unfussy daytime designs were inspired by the refined subjects of Lillian Bassman's portraits from the fifties and sixties... and in my mind, they make for the perfect honeymoon staples.
The designer worked with light tweeds, denim, linen and cashmere for day, focusing on cropped jackets, breezy shifts with fabric covered beaded trims, and fitted, feminine day dresses... All pure bliss, and all perfect accoutrement for a Santorini sunset.

Merci New York in Martha Stewart Weddings Fall 2010 Issue

por | | 0 comments

martha-stewart-weddings-fall-2010-fashion-issue-coverWe are thrilled to announce that Merci New York has made it to the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine! Can you see me? Yes, that's right... I'm the awe-inspired blond in the far left corner, swooning over the luscious dresses sweeping down the runway. Each one was more gorgeous than the last, truly.martha-stewart-weddings-fall-2010-fashion-issue-merci-new-york-veils-dresses-accessories-upper-east-side-venueLast month, Merci New York was thrilled to sit in on a runway-inspired fashion editorial that is now gracing the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings' {amazing} Fall 2010 Fashion Issue. The spread is packed with pages upon pages of luxe and stylish eye candy. From ethereal gowns {think Oscar de la Renta, Angel Sanchez, Carolina Herrera...} to elegant baubles {Harry Winston, Van Cleef and Arpels...} and every accessory in between {Christian Louboutin...}, it was truly a fashion-loving bride's dream -- and a wonderful afternoon for myself and fellow wedding bloggers Bee Kim of Wedding Bee and Jillian Clark of 100 Layer Cake.
martha-stewart-weddings-fall-2010-fashion-issue-merci-new-york-veils-dresses-accessories-upper-east-side-venueAlso sharing the fruits of the MSW styling team's impeccable eye were industry style-luminaries Sylvia Weinstock, Mark Ingram, Ronnie Rothstein, Gabriella Risatti, and of course, Martha Stewart Weddings Editorial Director, Darcy Miller.... whom you can also see sitting around the front row of the stunning Ukrainian Institute, {which actually happens to be a tres-chic wedding locale for the uptown bride}.
The historic Upper East Side mansion was actually a private home until 1955, and has played host to several posh events and iconic films in the past 50 years. It's beautiful architecture and dramatic moldings made me feel swept up and dropped down in the reels of Valentino: The Last Emperor. It was a phenomenal setting. martha-stewart-weddings-fall-2010-fashion-issue-merci-new-york-veils-dresses-accessories-upper-east-side-venueBut I digress. Let's talk fashion. Suffice it to say, my behind-the scenes i-Phone shots couldn't hold a candle to these gorgeous images... so you will just have to take my word on the pure scope of this project.
As Sherri Caudell Brennan, MSW's Fashion Editor, swirled past endless racks of taffeta, lace and silk, and escorted me to her accessories pulls, my heart almost sank. Tables upon tables of stunning shoes anxiously awaited their five seconds of fame, including some very sparkly favorites by Giuseppe Zanotti, ribbony peep-toes by Badgely Mischka, and ever-chic Christian Louboutin pumps.
Be-ribboned belts? Plush boleros? Blinding rings worthy for the likes of Tinsley Mortimer? Check, check and check! The back rooms were stocked with so many beautiful pieces, I wasn't sure how Sherry, Kate Berry and Daniel Biasatti could even select their looks. Their choices were remarkable though, and the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings proves it.
martha-stewart-weddings-fall-2010-fashion-issue-merci-new-york-veils-dresses-accessories-upper-east-side-venueAnyways, here I am waxing poetic, when you can actually experience this beautiful fashion editorial for yourself... The Martha Stewart Weddings Fall 2010 Fashion Issue hit newsstands this week, and I've already spied a few lucky brides perusing the pages at Hudson News at Grand Central Terminal.
While they were probably {ie, most certainly} ogling over this spread, these are a few of the other articles they may have missed their train by reading:
  • The Shape of Things to Come: The New Look of Flowers- Centerpieces, bouquets, boutonnieres and more.
  • Works of Art: The culinary arts meet the visual arts in museum-worthy wedding cakes
  • Sealed With a Kiss: Creative ways to work love's sweetest and most iconic expressions into your day
  • La Dolce Vita: Lake Como, Italy, sets the scene for a New York City couple's lavish affair.
Chic wedding-reading at its finest, as always.

A very special thank-you to the Martha Stewart Weddings team for having me on board.

Wedding Day Hair Tips with Paul Labrecque | Liz + Colin's Wedding

por | | 0 comments

As you know, I'm thrilled to be down in the Bahamas covering Liz and Colin's amazing wedding celebration at Sandals Emerald Bay Resort. It's the "day-before-the-big day" here in Great Exuma, and it certainly couldn't be a prettier one. Liz and Colin are out enjoying the beach with friends, and the Martha Stewart Weddings crew is buzzing away, putting the final touches on what will certainly be an amazing affair.
While the excitement grows and the afternoon gives way to a beach-side rehearsal dinner, I thought it would be fun to share some of Liz and Colin's other wedding day prep... like the flurry of fun activities that took place on an entirely different {bustling, busy, and very citified} island less than two weeks ago.Paul_Labrecque_Martha_Stewart_Weddings-CORELiz needed a touch up for her big day, so I tagged along to interview her stylist... I expected to gather all the standard goodies for you: tips on wedding day tresses, how to battle frizz, the regular. But I didn't expect to have so much fun in the salon chair.
I guess that's because I never met the famed Paul Labrecque, stylist to the celebrity and social elite, and owner of Manhattan's three hottest salon and spas.
I imagine even a bang trim is a party when Paul's doing your hair... Within moments, Liz and I were wrapped up in a world of celeb hair, misbehaving models and runways gone wrong. Liz left with fab highlights and I left with a wealth of expert information to share with you {as well as a mental note to wear waterproof mascara the next time I plan on laughing so hard}.
Anyway, here's an excerpt from our Q&A. As for the runway chatter, well, you'll just have to book a visit for that.Wedding Day Hair Tips with Paul Labrecque | Liz + Colin's WeddingI joined Liz at Paul's newest of three locations, situated on the third and sixth floors of the ever-chic CORE: Club, {an exclusive private membership-based lifestyle club on 55th Street between Madison and Park}. You don’t have to be a club member in order to receive Labrecque’s high-end services at CORE, though Liz certainly got star treatment as Paul began foiling her tresses.

Merci: What's the most common request you hear from brides?
Labrecque: "Brides always say 'For my wedding, I want to look like myself, but better,' so we always suggest a consultation about six months before the wedding day. We leave the length and talk about color. Then we give the bride time to get used to the changes, and highly suggest a final touch-up two weeks before the wedding." {Labrecque advises that cameras are notorious for picking up dark rings at the roots, so a two-week touch-up is a very important step}.

Merci: How interconnected are diet and hair health? What should a bride change in her diet to ensure beautiful wedding day hair?
Labrecque: "At the end of the day, you are your genes, but eating foods with vitamin B12, like olive oil and avocado, will definitely strengthen your hair." {For a quick wedding day fix, Labrecque also suggests adding hair pieces or extensions for a fuller look}.

Merci: What are the biggest trends you have seen in bridal hair styling? Which seem to be the most universal?
Labrecque: " 'Uncontrived' seems to be the word of the moment. It's always harder to create styles that appear haphazardly put up rather than overly 'done.' Low, soft chignons are very popular, as are softly swept back styles. We saw a lot of those at this year's awards ceremonies."

Paul_Labrecque_Martha_Stewart_Weddings-COREA final trim and blow dry make for a very happy Liz.

Merci: For destination wedding brides like Liz, do you always suggest they wear their hair up {in case of wind}?
Labrecque: "We always welcome pictures and photos of what the bride wants first. It's good to get rid of the options that her hair can't pull off, and concentrate on making other styles work. For destination weddings, we don't necessarily need to pull her hair up. If she's keeping it down, we often add extensions and pieces to natural, long hair for a windy day. There's less teasing, less spray, and you know exactly what you are getting into."

Merci: What is the one tip you give your stylists when they are working with a bride?
Labrecque: "Be clear with the bride. There shouldn't be any surprises"

Engagement Session | Nicole + Jon

These pretty, pretty pictures come courtesy of the uber-talented Galaxie Andrews {also featured here}. They're so fun and whimsical, they make me want to skip and jump {and eat cupcakes, of course}.GalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkEngagement Session | Nicole + JonGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkGalaxieAndrews_MerciNewYorkAccording to Galaxie, Nicole and Jon wanted an urban setting and fun props to reflect their personalities. Nicole is very stylish, Jon is super sweet and playful, and they both have a great sense of humor {hence the fun books and colorful treats}... It was a fun day for everyone, especially their pup Willow, who was sweetly rewarded with a 'sprinkles doggie cupcake' for her cameo.

other details: Nicole's dress is from Anthropologie; red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting {yum!} from Sprinkles. Photos courtesy Galaxie Andrews.
